Guiding Principles

 

 

 

The purpose of the Guiding Principles is to establish better land-use plans for Burwash area.

The Guiding Principles help define and guide how the Citizens Advisory Group for Burwash conducts its business and presents itself to the public.

The Citizens Advisory Group for Burwash:

  • recognizes and is proud of the complex natural and human history of the Burwash area - an area that has been subject to human activity for about 100 years, including an industrial farm, road, and dyke construction, forestry and tree planting, farming, introduction of exotic, decorative and crop plants, and introduction and migration of unusual wildlife like elk, wild turkey and trumpeter swans;

  • recognizes that it is the cumulative impact of human activity on the Burwash lands that make Burwash very special;

  • recognizes that sound land-use planning involves meaningful participation, coordination and cooperation among interested and affected stakeholders and citizens as well as all levels of government and other organizations that manage or use the land;

Guiding Principles:

  • future Burwash land-uses will be diversified to ensure that the educational, cultural, historic, recreational, economic, environmental, and social benefits are realized as they are interrelated and require integrated planning to attain reasonable and efficient use.

  • decisions shall integrate both a long- and short-term educational, cultural, historic, recreational, economic, environmental, and social considerations;

  • encourage and recommend complementary land-uses that advance the educational, cultural, historic, recreational, economic, environmental, and social goals;

  • use objective and independent processes and observations and traditional knowledge to assist in making common-sense decisions to form or evaluate positions, advise on possible Burwash land-uses, and assess the impact of a potential Burwash land-uses;

  • encourage diverse participation and communication;

  • encourage or sponsor training, education, sponsored guest speakers to help create an informed "learning community" that is aware of possible Burwash land-use opportunities;

  • incorporate new scientific and policy insights, as well as changing educational, cultural, historic, recreational, economic, environmental, and social factors to review periodically Burwash land-use plans.
